Emmy and the P’s are always full of surprises, bringing to their audiences a unique mix of contemporary classical works, traditional fiddle tunes, inventive tango arrangements and more. With Emmy on violin and fiddle, Peter on cello and guitar, and Piero on vibraphone and hand percussion, the options are endless and this trio enjoys exploring the endless possibilities an eclectic ensemble can offer. The energy and rhythmic drive of their music is infectious and audience members find themselves tapping their toes or even getting up to dance as they listen to the music of Emmy and the P’s.

EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks and I will be playing a short set of tunes and songs this Thursday from 7 to 7:30 pm on Facebook Live as part of the 14th annual Singing for Shelter organized by Anne and Mark Gorman.

Curated by violinist Johnny Gandelsman, “This is America” is a new commissioning and recording project featuring over 20 works for solo violin written by American and US-based composers.

The invited composers – including icons like Rhiannon Giddens and Conrad Tao – were asked to reflect on the events of the past year and to consider the impact the period has had on their lives and on their communities.

A long-time FirstWorks collaborator, Johnny Gandelsman is a co-founder of Brooklyn Rider and a member of the Silk Road Ensemble. The New Yorker has called him “revelatory” in concert, placing him in the company of “radically transformative” performers like Maurizio Pollini, Peter Serkin and Christian Zacharias.

For this special FirstWorks program, Gandelsman will perform selections from “This is America,” and Providence’s Community MusicWorks will join him for a performance of Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto.”

The concert will open with the premiere of “Woodland Impressions,” a program developed with EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks through FirstWorks’ inaugural commission initiative. Experience the new suite for erhu (two-stringed Chinese fiddle), violin and marimba composed by erhu virtuoso Jing Wang, performing with violinist EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks and percussionist Piero Guimaraes. “Woodland Impressions” is inspired by FirstWorks themes of Raise Your Voice (celebrating diversity) and Earth First (addressing environmental justice).

Join us for an extended 90-minute Saturday Evening Waltz Party with Larksgrove -- on-line or in-person at Monroe Hall in Santa Rosa! The music starts at 10:00 Eastern.

Blending classical and traditional music, the duo Larksgrove brings a fresh voice to concert and dance halls. Peter Zay, cello and guitar, and EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks, violin and fiddle, enjoy the challenge of playing new styles of music and difficult repertoire, and their performances reveal the comfort and delight they glean from creative collaboration. Their unique interpretations of the classics and novel arrangements of traditional fiddle tunes infuse their performances with inventiveness and surprise.
