Firebird - Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra & Dance Ensemble

  • Spaulding auditorium (map)

Famous for its rich rhythms, Russian folkloric melodies and dissonant strains, Stravinsky's 1910 work for the Ballet Russes broke boundaries. Now, two Hop Ensembles collaborate to reimagine the tale of rebirth as a pair of simulcast performances. The Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra will perform the entire Firebird in Spaulding Auditorium, enriched by a live projection of choreography by the Dartmouth Dance Ensemble. At the same moment (and on the other side of the Hop) audiences will be immersed in the reworked dance, accompanied in real-time by the dynamic orchestral score.

The Human Element - New Bedford Symphony Orchestra

Yaniv Dinur, conductor

Michel Camilo, piano

Missy Mazzoli: River Rouge Transfiguration
Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 3
Michel Camilo: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No.1

This concert is a celebration of transformation—of sound, of spirit, and of the boundless possibilities in music that dares to cross borders.

We begin with Missy Mazzoli’s River Rouge Transfiguration—a vivid, pulsing soundscape inspired by Detroit’s industrial heart. It’s a musical metamorphosis, where steel and smoke give way to shimmering light and unexpected beauty.

Next, we dive into the rich, emotional landscapes of Brahms’ Symphony No. 3—a masterpiece of tenderness and passion. From its noble opening to its yearning finale, Brahms invites us into a world where strength and vulnerability exist in perfect harmony.

Finally, Dominican-born jazz and classical powerhouse Michel Camilo brings electrifying charisma to the stage with his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1. Blending Afro-Caribbean rhythms, jazz spontaneity, and classical grandeur, Camilo’s concerto is a thrilling ride—bold, joyful, and utterly alive. And the slow movement will stir your soul.

Feel the rush. Be transformed. Let the music take over.

Note: We are delighted to welcome concertmaster candidate Hikaru Yonezaki as concertmaster for this evening’s performance.

Hamilton. That word means one thing these days: the hottest musical in the world. We’re thrilled to bring you the current touring star of this theatrical phenomenon, Julius Thomas, appearing across the country as Alexander Hamilton. Partnered with the lead singer of the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Mark Kopitzke, they’ve created an unforgettable show of swing and Motown hits.

These crooners sing with powerful charisma in numbers like “It Don't Mean a Thing” and “Moonlight Serenade.” Show-stoppers like “For Once In My Life” and “It’s Not Unusual” will pack the show with explosive energy. Whether it’s a classic of the American songbook like “Just One of Those Things” or a Jackson 5 medley, Julius and Mark have an unmatched ability to connect with audiences.

On top of extraordinary vocals, what makes this duo so fun is the ease and chemistry between these long-time friends. With 30+ combined years of performing under their belts, the stories they share come from a heartfelt love for this music.

Two guys. Two incredible voices. So much fun!

  • First Unitarian Church of Providence (map)

Curated by violinist Johnny Gandelsman, “This is America” is a new commissioning and recording project featuring over 20 works for solo violin written by American and US-based composers.

The invited composers – including icons like Rhiannon Giddens and Conrad Tao – were asked to reflect on the events of the past year and to consider the impact the period has had on their lives and on their communities.

A long-time FirstWorks collaborator, Johnny Gandelsman is a co-founder of Brooklyn Rider and a member of the Silk Road Ensemble. The New Yorker has called him “revelatory” in concert, placing him in the company of “radically transformative” performers like Maurizio Pollini, Peter Serkin and Christian Zacharias.

For this special FirstWorks program, Gandelsman will perform selections from “This is America,” and Providence’s Community MusicWorks will join him for a performance of Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto.”

The concert will open with the premiere of “Woodland Impressions,” a program developed with EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks through FirstWorks’ inaugural commission initiative. Experience the new suite for erhu (two-stringed Chinese fiddle), violin and marimba composed by erhu virtuoso Jing Wang, performing with violinist EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks and percussionist Piero Guimaraes. “Woodland Impressions” is inspired by FirstWorks themes of Raise Your Voice (celebrating diversity) and Earth First (addressing environmental justice).
